Cars For Food NYC not only provides food programs, we also offer supportive services to help New Yorkers become self sufficient.

The Coney Island Lighthouse Mission provides ESL and GED training, drug and alcohol counseling, housing for many formerly homeless clients, and job readiness training.

Additionally, they provide an educational after-school program which began in 2007 that provides homework assistance and tutoring, hot snacks, games, art projects, and bible study for students aged 5-13, Monday-Friday.

Mission Statement from the President

- Mr. Eugene Bernhardt

"For 15 years, I have worked as an Adult Home Administrator in several facilities throughout the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.
In 1988 I founded Reaching Out for Service Programs, Inc., a Brooklyn-based nonprofit service and advocacy organization that coordinates and administers programs for the homeless, low-income, and other underserved members of the community by providing them with food and clothing.

Since its inception, Reaching Out for Service Programs has also provided assessments and referrals for substance abusers. In addition to the organization's signature initiatives, such as its yearly coat and food drives, Reaching Out for Service also assists with housing and employment support.

I have also served as a coordinator for the Italian-American Civil Rights League and currently sit on the Board of Directors for the Gateway Counseling Center, and the Professional Pest Management Association of New York City."

In 1960, Mr. Bernhardt graduated from Brooklyn’s Lafayette High School. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, from which he was honorably discharged in 1964. In 1985, Mr. Bernhardt was awarded a certificate in Extended Care Administration from C. W. Post University.

Mr. Bernhardt is a strong believer in treating all individuals with compassion, respect, and dignity -- a philosophy that he espouses in both his professional and service careers.
